Peter and the Wolf Higley Center for the Performing Arts, 4132 East Pecos Road (at Recker Road), Gilbert, AZ 85295 — Performed by Symphony of the Southwest. Narrated by Ms. Joanie Flatt — In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children. The intent was to cultivate “musical tastes in children form the first years of school.” He could scarcely have foreseen quite how successful his playful classic would become or how consistently it would delight and inspire children and adults for years to come. The students who attended last year’s concerts at the HCPA were delighted and proved this statement to be true. English subtitles. — Mermaid is a sophisticated adult fairytale with gorgeous cinematography about love, modernity, and the materialism of New Russia. The film begins with Alice’s conception. Alisa lives in a seaside shack with her mom and grandma and who has special talents—she can influence the weather and make wishes come true. She grows up in a small seaside village where she attends a school for the mentally disabled because she refuses to speak. She moves to Moscow with her family. Still mute, she grants wishes, dyes her hair green, gets advice from billboards and falls in love with a man, Sasha, whose life she saves by pulling him of a river. Alicia falls in love with Sasha and becomes his housekeeper to get close to him. Alicia uses her whole body to telegraph expressions. She spends whole scenes dressed as a cellphone walking around Moscow and through voice and body language we’re still with her. Sasha sells real estate on the moon by day and drinks himself into oblivion while chatting up supermodels at night. He’s a new Russian and she’s definitely an old-world kind of girl. — Best Film Award of Sofia Film Festival, Bulgaria, March 2008 — ÐÓÑÀËÊÀ — Àëèñà — õðîíè÷åñêàÿ íåóäà÷íèöà. Oct 3 – Sat – 11:30 am – Tengri (Blue Heavens) Oct 5 – Mon – 4:05 pm 2008, Drama, 110 min., Language: Kyrgyz and Russian with English Subtitles Temur, a thirty year old Kazakh, decides to start life again in his ancestral village in the Kyrghyz Mountains where he meets Amira, a young married woman. Temur watches sorrowfully as the individual village stories unfold and he tries to help the community out in any way he can. In this way he comes closer to Amira and Taib, her young brother-in-law. Amira and Temur become lovers. When Amira´s husband returns from the war the lovers decide to leave the village and travel to a place that would nurture their dreams. Oct 3 – Sat – 8:55 pm – Zift Oct 5 – Mon – 8:25 pm 2008, Black Comedy, 91 min., Bulgarian with English Subtitles AWARDS: Golden Chest International Television Festival -Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures/Best Director of Photography/Special Prize of the Jury, Moscow International Film Festival - Russian Film Clubs Federation /Best Director, Sofia International Film Festival - Best Bulgarian Feature Film. Mature Content Communist slogans, valuable diamonds, rare poisons, glass eyes and scatological humor—these are just a few of the elements driving the plot of Javor Gardev’s immensely energetic debut feature. Using a film noir framework, exquisite black-and-white cinematography and rapid-fire dialogue, ZIFT depicts an ex-con named Moth (Zachari Baharov) on the night after his release from prison. Falsely incarcerated for murder in the 1940s, he proves himself a model Communist while inside and is released on good behavior two decades later into a drastically different Bulgaria. With its breathless leaps among the multiple stories nestled in its overarching narrative, ZIFT recalls the masterpieces of American film noir, the cinema of the Coen brothers or the literature of Roberto Bolaño. Featuring a bathhouse scene that equals in visceral audacity the one in Cronenberg’s "Eastern Promises," and a revelation concerning a cache for jewels that tops "The Maltese Falcon," ZIFT is an unforgettable story about fate, freedom and society’s various notions of justice. ~ San Francisco International Film Festival Oct 3 – Sat – 9:05 pm – Shameless (Nestyda) Oct 4 – Sun – 9:15 pm 2008, Comedy, Feature, 88 min., Czech with English Subtitles A story about the fickle Oskar, who certainly has reason to see himself as a successful man in the prime of life. He has his roles perfectly balanced: beloved husband, attentive father and favorite television weatherman. One Saturday morning, however, Oskar wakes up to the realization that his wife’s nose is just too big. How could he have lived with her for so long? He decides to take up with a young lover and eventually leaves his family for her. His awareness that he must find true love at all costs drives him from one extreme to the next, and also into the arms of the aging singer Nora. The clouds begin to gather above the man who was always ready with a smile for his TV audience as he forecast the worst possible weather... SHAMELESS was inspired by the book, "Short Stories about Marriage and Sex," by Michal Viewegh who, with a degree of hyperbole, describes the film as an “unromantic comedy.” ~ Karlovy Vary International Film Festival |

Deaf Manuel Pacheco Integrated Learning Center (underground) ILC 130, University Blvd (at Cherry Ave.) University of Arizona, Tucson — Russian, 1998, 115 minute film shown for International Education Awareness Week. Introduction by Micheal Brewer, University of Arizona Library. Free. Presented by the Russian and Slavic Studies Department. — Written and Directed by Valerii Todorovskii. This highly acclaimed criminal/love drama follows the adventures of two women who find themselves thrown together to navigate their way through two disparate, yet intersecting worlds – the hostile world of the Moscow mafia and the silent world of the deaf. The adventure begins when Rita, a young woman pawned to the mob by her debt-ridden boyfriend, is rescued and taken in by Yaya, an obstinate deaf woman, masterfully played by Dina Korzun. Aleksandr Aigi's award winning musical score and Iuri Shaigardanov's evocative location photography impart a latent, otherworldly atmosphere to the film's fast-paced narrative. — Join us for delicious homemade treats and tea at our Bake Sale outside, prior to the event! — See part 3 of 11 online, link for complete download, and other Russian films. |

Project Restoration Russia. Murray is a guest professor at Moscow State University of Psychology and Education where she offers post-graduate courses to professionals. In 8 years she taught 2000+ students from almost 200 cities in the FSU. — Her grandparents were born in villages near Saratov. Many of her relatives suffered in the Stalinist terror (killed, starved to death in the forced collectivizations, or sent to concentration camps in Siberia).
