This course, taught by a native Russian, Klavdia Iarkova born in Siberia, will present a panorama of the Russian culture, tradition, geography, sites of importance, people, education, and traditions. There will be an emphasis on Siberia, which is not an icy wasteland but an area of great beauty vastly misunderstood by most Americans. Discussion will also occur on the topic of life in Russia before and after Perestroika. For anyone with Russian roots, with plans for travel to Russia, or who is just interested in the subject, this will be a fascinating look into a country of great beauty and rich traditions. Klavdia is eager to share information about her homeland with interested students. Her degree is from the Moscow Lenin Pedagogical University where she majored in English and German. CANCELLED. Corrupt town officials, aware that a government inspector plans an incognito visit, mistakenly assume that an impecunious clerk is the fellow. In this class you will be introduced to the 4,000 year-old art of egg decorating using the "batik" method of waxing and dyeing. These elaborately beautiful eggs were originally used in church rituals, as burial artifacts and as gifts. The Queen of England owns several very beautiful ones in her own personal collection. They make wonderful gifts, tree or holiday ornaments, or a wonderful hobby. "Drawing" on the egg with a melted wax implement, you will create designs of breathtaking complexity and beauty. Be prepared to pay the instructor $12 for a supply kit. Bring a sack lunch. Taught by Chenette Wangen, and artist and illustrator who has done Ukranian egs and taught the art for many years. - March 23 -- Sat -- 11 am to 3 pm -- Gottlieb Weisser and the Germans from Russia. Germans from Russia Meeting at Glendale Library, Foothills Branch, 19055 N 57th Ave (1/4 mile North of Union Hills). Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Speaker: Charles Weisser will present his popular program which dramatizes the story of Germans from Russia through the experiences of a Gottlieb Weisser who lived between 1840 and 1933. The story tells about the conditions that convinced the family to move from Germany to Russia. It discusses early colony community life, why they decided to move to America, their adaptation to prairie life, their founding of churches, and, finally their twilight years in a prairie town. The program presents the historical and social circumstances that shaped a German-Russian family and others with similar experiences.

Dr. Wirtschafter (Ph.D., Columbia University, 1983) is working on a monograph dealing with the introduction of West European Theater into Russia in the eighteenth century. Her publications on the system of social estates (sosloviia) in Russian history are well known to Russian scholars both in the United States and abroad.

The Princess and the Pea tells the story of a feisty princess who must undergo a series of tests to prove she is a "real" Princess. The Question of the Greco-Catholic Church in Ukraine" ASU Social Sciences Building SS318 Wade Conference Room Father Andriy Chirovsky Father Chirovsky is director at Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies at Saint Paul University in Ottawa Canada. During this 2002-2003 academic year, Father Chirovsky is also a REESC faculty affiliate in residence at ASU. The talk will focus on the current state of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church, its position in relation to the three main Orthodox jurisdictions in Ukraine and the difficulties involved in attempting to identify with the best of what both Orthodoxy and Catholicism have to offer.
