June 4 to 27 — ASU Summer Critical Language Institute is offering Serbian-Croatian, Macedonian, and Tatar. (Armenian will be taught in 2002.) ASU waives tuition or students enrolled in CLI courses, but the registration is only $18-26 for 8-weeks of intensive instruction to earn 6-10 credits. Learn more at REESC. The Tsygankovs will be accompanied by the Arizona Balalaika Orchestra and Kalinka Russian Dancers in a concert featuring the unmatched skills of the Tsygankov family of Moscow, making a rare appearance in Arizona. Nov 6 Tuesday 8 pm & 11 pm Nova: Russia's Nuclear Warriors — TV Channel 8 KAET — 60 min. — Journalist Vladimir Posner profiles "Russia's Nuclear Warriors" in a visit to a missile base 500 miles from Moscow. While these "rocketchiki" are elite, most of Russia's rockets are anything but. And the country's early-warning system is alarmingly inadequate (a 1995 false alarm was called off two minutes before a nuclear attack, Posner says). But the soldiers interviewed here are resolute. "If an order is given it will be carried out," says a colonel. "And only after it has been carried out will the missileer start thinking about what he has done."
