I like to visit Vysókij in September and October when the Subbotniks celebrate Yom Kippur (יום כִּפּוּרִים) - Day of Atonement. During this autumn holiday period, the Subbotniki pray, apologize to all and ask for forgiveness. The photographs below - Judgement Day. |

Three old women (babushkas) stand on the dam of the village pond on a cloudy day. They are going to the pond where a special river prayer service (Tashlich ritual) will be performed. On Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) prior to Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), Subbotniki pray at the pond, and "their sins are cast into the water" - a rite of purification. |

The Subbotniks gather on the bank of the village pond. All are waiting for the men to pray. (Note: Hebrew
traditions says that the original Yom Kippur prayer service was held on
the banks of the River Jordan. There is no river in Vysókij so the
Subbotniks pray by the pond instead.}
