1912--First Arizona Molokans
This photo was taken near Grand Avenue and Lateral 19 (now Bethany Home Road). The Molokans dug a ditch through the desert from their colony on 75th Avenue to this canal. The 3 men in straw hats on the far right took this photo to commemorate the head gate they installed along the canal to supply water to the new Molokan agricultural colony. (Click on picture to see very large group photo.) Note, among the Molokan men shown, the old Russian dress on some--long high collar shirt (kosavorotka) with rope belt (poyzd), and Russian cap--while others have already adapted American clothes -- overalls, cowboy hats, and suspenders.
